Basil

The act

Acoustic violin over original piano backing tracks, played with more energy than most people expect from the instrument. Basil is based in Ballina and works across private functions, weddings and festivals. The repertoire crosses classical, pop, rock, jazz and blues: Bach's Prelude from the First Suite, Vivaldi's Winter, Pachelbel's Canon, Piazzolla's Oblivion, Cavatina, Ave Maria, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, La Llorona. New songs can be learned for the occasion. He brings an amp and speaker plus two handheld microphones, though indoors or with a small crowd outside the violin usually carries on its own.

Good to know

What to expect

Acoustic violin over original piano backing tracks, and the energy level is higher than people expect when they hear the word violin. BASIL covers popular songs, classics, film soundtracks, classical pieces and Christian music, so the same booking can shift mood several times. If there's a particular song that matters to your event, he'll learn it. That flexibility is worth asking about early rather than on the day.

On the day

He brings an amp and speaker for the violin and the backing tracks, which is what you'd want for a bigger space or a larger crowd. Indoors, or outside with a small group, the violin carries fine on its own and no amplification is needed. Worth deciding which it is when you enquire, since it changes the setup.

Set List

The repertoire crosses a few worlds. Bach's Prelude from the First Cello Suite and one of the arias, Vivaldi's Winter, Pachelbel's Canon in D, Schubert's Ave Maria and Cavatina on the classical side. Piazzolla's Oblivion for the tango end, La Llorona from Mexico, a Greek piece, and Yann Tiersen's film writing. Then Autumn Leaves, What a Wonderful World and Hallelujah. And there's more than what's listed here.

Performance options

Bookings are worked out by how long you want the violin going, with one, two and three hour options as the usual starting points. Basil can also learn something new for the occasion, a first dance or a piece with a story attached to it, and that's arranged when you book rather than sprung on the day. Send through the timings and what you'd like played.
