Good to know
What to expect
Swing and blues, played by people who mean it. The organ trio sits in a tradition that a lot of jazz groups have wandered away from, and Darren Heinrich has stayed with it: foot-tapping, funky, drenched in blues, and contemporary rather than a museum piece. It moves. That's the point of the Hammond sound. Guests who think they don't like jazz tend to work out fairly quickly that this is the kind they do. Book it as a trio or add the fourth player, and either way the room gets groove rather than background wallpaper.
On the day
They squeeze into most spaces, which is unusual for a group this size. The trio and quartet are self-contained for the majority of bookings, so a corner of a room, a small stage or a spot beside a dance floor will do and nothing needs hiring in. Bigger corporate rooms are the exception. Once the space gets large enough that sound stops carrying on its own, additional production comes into it, so describe the venue when you enquire and that gets worked out before the day.
