James Dean

The act

Live looping is the trick here. James builds a track in front of you, layer by layer, so a solo show sounds a lot bigger than one bloke with a guitar. He describes the approach as a producer meeting a one man band, and that's about right. Get the full band together and it shifts again, closer to a festival stage than a function room. The repertoire runs past 1,500 songs and he'll learn more on request, which means the night can be shaped around your crowd rather than a fixed list. He reads a room and changes course mid set when it needs it. Formats run from solo through to a six piece, with horns a common addition at the top end. He brings touring grade sound and lighting, so all you need is a power point within 30 metres and a wet weather plan outdoors.

Good to know

What to expect

James has put years into refining the mechanics of a live show, and the sound system is part of that, a full touring grade rig that covers most of what a production company would otherwise charge you for. The more interesting part is what he does with it. He watches the room and changes course mid set when the night wants something different, so it's not a fixed list played at you. Music to dance to, sure. But he's after something people are involved in rather than politely watching.

On the day

Everything's covered by the booking itself, production, lighting, backline and a microphone for speeches. Two things needed from your end: a power outlet within 30 metres of where he's playing, and a wet weather plan if the whole thing is outdoors.

Performance options

You build the line-up. Solo, where the live looping does the heavy lifting. Duo or trio with one or two extra musicians or singers, looping optional. Or a four, five or six piece, the six most often taking a horn section. The additions to choose from are female vocals, drums, percussion, bass, a pianist with keyboard, second guitar, saxophone and trumpet.
