Maxi S.

The act

Guitar, voice, a looper and a set of decks. Maxi S. covers a lot of ground from a Sydney base, moving between jazz, soul, RnB, reggae, surf rock, pop, country, folk, indie, blues and Latin pop, sorted roughly from the classics through to the newer stuff. The act is modular: solo with live looping, solo plus DJ, a duo or trio adding percussion, keys, saxophone or Spanish guitar, or a full band with a DJ set built in. Hotels, bars, restaurants and council festivals sit alongside weddings, corporate nights and birthdays. He'll work out the stage area with you rather than dictate it. Outdoors, he'll want cover in case the weather turns.

Good to know

What to expect

Maxi covers a lot of ground in one set. Jazz, soul, RnB, reggae, surf rock, pop, country, folk, blues and Latin pop all sit in the repertoire, roughly ordered from the older material through to the newer. Live looping means one person builds up parts on the spot, so a solo booking sounds bigger than one bloke with a guitar. He'll settle into ambience, run singalongs, or push it towards dance hits, and the energy is the constant across all three. Hotels, bars, restaurants and council festivals have all had him, along with weddings and birthdays.

On the day

The performance area gets worked out between you and him rather than dictated, because the right spot depends on the room and where the guests will be. If you're outdoors and the weather could turn, a covered area is needed to keep the gear safe.

Performance options

Start with solo: acoustic guitar, vocals and live looping. Add a DJ set to that and one person covers both halves of the night. From there it builds. A duo brings in percussion or drums, or keyboard, saxophone or Spanish and electric guitar instead. A trio takes two of those. The full band runs guitar, vocals and looping with percussion, keys and saxophone together. And any of the duo, trio or band line-ups can have a DJ attached for the later part of the evening. DJ on its own is available too.
