Miss Elm

The act

Two ukuleles, and neither sounds the way you'd guess. Miss Elm plays a baritone with a deeper, jazzier tone and a six string tenor that rings closer to a harp, and her voice covers three octaves over the top of the finger picking. The Brisbane set leans on jazz standards and soul: Fly Me to the Moon, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Autumn Leaves, Lean on Me, plus Disney numbers when there are kids in the room. She reads the function and shifts between upbeat and easy listening as it goes. She also runs ukulele workshops, printed take home materials included, for teams that want to make something together instead of just watching. Holds a Blue Card.

Good to know

What to expect

Two ukuleles, and neither one sounds like what you're picturing. The baritone is deeper and jazzier, the six string tenor rings closer to a harp. Over the top of the finger picking sits a voice with three octaves in it. Miss Elm watches how the function is going and moves between upbeat, mellow and easy listening to match it, which keeps the room warm rather than pushing it somewhere it isn't ready for. She also runs ukulele workshops if you want your group making something together instead of sitting and listening.

On the day

In a smaller venue all she needs is a power point for a small amp and PA. Bigger rooms need a bigger system, so mention the space and the guest numbers when you enquire and that gets sorted in advance. Playing outdoors, a covered performance space is much appreciated, since ukuleles and weather are not natural friends.

Performance options

The wedding option is one or two songs of your choosing during the ceremony, then two 45 minute sets over canapes. For a party it's either two 45 minute sets or three of 30 minutes, with the songs pulled from her list according to what you pick. The workshop runs two hours. Travel, set-up and printed materials to take away are all part of it, and instruments can be hired in for the group depending on how many of you there are, so people leave having actually learned something.
