Ten musicians on stage: three singers, a three-piece horn section, and drums, bass, guitar and keys behind them. Motor City Sounds recreate the sound of 60s and 70s soul, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Temptations end of the songbook, and they play it to be danced to. The Ballarat band have appeared at White Night in both Melbourne and Ballarat, the Moonambel Fireworks Festival, Memo Music Hall in St Kilda and Piano Bar in Geelong and Ballarat, and they warmed up the audience for ABC's Q&A. Among the members are a former John Butler Trio player and a top 20 X Factor finalist. They'll play one, two or three sets, with full sound and lighting available and a scaled-back setup for smaller rooms.

Good to know
What to expect
Ten musicians recreating 60s and 70s soul, and the honest expectation is that you'll be dancing for most of the night. Three singers out front, three horns behind them, and a four piece rhythm section of drums, bass, guitar and keys. That's a big sound in a room, and it's the right one for this music. They'll play one set, two or three depending on how your night runs.
On the day
They can bring full sound and lighting with industry crew running it, or scale the whole thing down if your event is a smaller one. The stage space they need is roughly 6 metres wide by 3 metres deep, which is worth checking with your venue early given the size of the band.
Set List
Motown and Stax, mostly. ABC and I Want You Back and I'll Be There from the Jackson 5, plus Blame It On The Boogie and Can You Feel It from The Jacksons. Marvin Gaye is all over it: Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, How Sweet It Is and It Takes Two. Then The Temptations with Ain't Too Proud To Beg, Get Ready and I Can't Get Next To You, The Supremes with Baby Love and Come See About Me, Aretha Franklin's Chain Of Fools, Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour and Don't Knock My Love, Otis Redding's Hard To Handle and I Can't Turn You Loose, Sam and Dave, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, Kool and the Gang, and Knock On Wood.
Performance options
The ten piece line up is the show, so what changes between bookings is the production around it. Motor City Sounds can supply the sound system and the lighting rig, sized to what you actually need, and they will scale the whole setup down for a smaller room instead of forcing a big stage plot into it. Anything from one set to three. Venue, stage and the size of the PA all feed into what gets loaded in, so tell them where you are holding it and how many people are coming when you enquire.
