SoundCliff

The act

Saxophones, keyboard and drums. Small footprint, big sound. SoundCliff Jazz Trio work Sydney functions with jazz standards from the 40s through the 70s, plus funk, blues, soul, bossa and Latin rhythms, and they'll drop a funky take on a pop song or a classic rock tune in when the mood shifts. They're good at reading a room, sitting back into the background over dinner and then stepping forward when it's time to dance. Requests are welcome, and they'll learn material for a theme if you ask early enough. The trio can grow to four, five or six with guitar, bass, trombone, trumpet, extra saxophones or percussion. They bring their own sound system or work with the venue's.

Good to know

What to expect

Saxophones, keyboard and drums, and a bigger sound than three people ought to make. The trio work through jazz standards from the 40s to the 70s along with funk, blues, soul, bossa and Latin, and they'll slip a funky version of a pop song or an old rock tune in when the room shifts. Reading the room is the skill here: they'll stay well back during dinner and then move forward when it's time for people to dance. Requests are fine, and with enough notice they'll learn songs for a theme.

On the day

They bring a professional sound system of their own, or they'll plug into whatever the venue already has if that's simpler. Either way works. Three players don't need much floor, but if you're thinking about growing the line-up, mention it early, because six musicians need a good deal more space than three do.

Performance options

A trio is the standard shape: saxophones, keyboard and drums. From there it grows to four, five or six by adding guitar, bass, trombone, trumpet, more saxophones or percussion, depending on the sound you're after. A bigger horn section gives a function room more weight. A guitar and bass fills out the rhythm side. Tell them the room and the mood and they'll suggest which additions actually earn their place.
