Sydney Jazz Collective

The act

Jazz, pop, funk and soul, played by a Sydney ensemble that scales from a solo musician up to a sextet or larger. Instrumentation can include saxophone, double bass, piano and keys, guitar, drums, trumpet and vocals, in vocal or instrumental line-ups. The dance portion of the night pulls from James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Bruno Mars and plenty more. They'll take your preferences and build the program around them, learn a bridal waltz, or play a Hora. Weddings are the bulk of the work, around a hundred a year. Normal household power is all the band needs. Insured.

Good to know

What to expect

A typical night opens with relaxed background jazz over drinks and canapes, often from an acoustic duo or trio, sometimes in a separate space to the reception room. A vocalist joins for dinner with jazz standards, quiet enough that people can still talk across the table. Then the speeches finish, the energy lifts and the popular material comes out. They'll arrange your favourite song for the first dance. Around a hundred weddings a year means they know the well-known Sydney venues from the inside, which shows up in small ways: a decent sound out of a hard room, and an easy working relationship with the function coordinator.

On the day

Ordinary household power is the whole requirement. Nothing three phase, nothing unusual, just normal outlets near wherever the band ends up playing. That keeps the logistics simple even when the line-up grows, and it means a balcony or a separate space for the arrival drinks is as workable as the main reception room. If the venue is one they already know, they will have a fair idea where the power sits.

Performance options

Line-ups run from a single musician up to a sextet, and larger again if the room calls for it. Both vocal and instrumental versions are available, drawing on saxophone, double bass, keyboard and piano, guitar, drums, trumpet and voice. Which combination suits depends on the space and what you want the music doing.
