Kaley Chu

The act

Kaley Chu speaks to immigrants, women and young people about building a better life, drawing on her own move to Australia and the business she built here. She won't stand up and tell a room what to do. The approach is stories instead, some her own learnings, plenty of them borrowed from the hundreds of strangers she has taken to lunch, and the audience draws its own conclusions. Expect her onsite an hour early, presented well, chatting to people before and after. Formats run from a fifteen minute TED-style talk through a forty five minute keynote with questions, out to a full two day workshop. A microphone is the whole rider. She'll ask for the slot before lunch if you can spare it, so the room can go straight out and try it.

Good to know

What to expect

She'll be there an hour before you need her, dressed for the room and already talking to people. That matters more than it looks on a run sheet, because by the time she's on stage she knows who she's talking to. The talk itself is funny and it moves. She won't lecture your audience or hand them a list of rules. Instead you get stories, some of them hers, plenty of them borrowed from the strangers she's taken to lunch, and the audience works out its own conclusions. She sticks around afterwards too.

On the day

A microphone. That's genuinely the whole list. Kaley Chu turns up, plugs into whatever you already have and gets on with it, so there's no gear to organise and nothing to clear off the stage. One request worth building into your programme, though: she'd rather speak in the slot immediately before lunch. The reason is practical. The talk is about having lunch with strangers, and if the room walks out of it straight into a meal, some of them will actually try it that day instead of thinking about it on the drive home.

Performance options

The shortest option is a fifteen minute TED-style talk, tight and built around one idea. A forty five minute keynote with questions at the end sits in the middle, and at the far end she runs full workshop training across two days. Anything between those is fair game as well. She's done all three shapes and has no preference, so tell her the slot you're trying to fill and she'll say what fits it.
