The African Next Door

The act

Patrick spent over a decade as a refugee in Kakuma Refugee Camp before migrating to Australia and eventually becoming an Australian citizen. He speaks about that journey, and about what came after, because arriving somewhere safe brought its own set of problems to work through. Twelve years of public speaking sit behind the presentations, which are built around resilience, immigration and self-belief and use real examples from his own life rather than theory. Interactive sections keep audiences involved, and the talk is pitched to suit any age group, from high school students to corporate rooms. Diversity and inclusion sessions and keynote work are also on offer. He holds a working with children Blue Card. Any setup arrangement is workable.

Good to know

What to expect

Patrick has been speaking publicly for twelve years, and the presentation reflects that: real moments from his own life rather than borrowed theory. Interactive stretches pull the audience in instead of leaving them watching. He pitches the material at whoever is in the room, so a high school hall and a corporate audience each get a version that fits.

Performance options

Four talks, and you choose by what the audience needs. Resilience covers holding steady through the hardest parts of his life, and works for any audience. Immigration walks through his arrival in Australia start to finish, which suits students studying the subject. Self Belief traces how he went from not speaking English on arrival to finishing a bachelor degree and then a master's in management. The anti bullying talk is built for schools, drawing on his own experience of it, and uses discussion and exercises rather than a lecture to encourage resilience and kindness. Diversity and inclusion sessions and keynote work round it out.
