The Green Fields

The act

Fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitars and bass, played by three Brisbane musicians who came up through the city's traditional Irish and folk scene. The Green Fields want you singing along, and they'll tell you as much: Galway Girl, I'll Tell Me Ma, Caledonia and Ride On, with tune sets in between. But the night doesn't have to stay Irish. They also cover the 60s through to now, from The Dubliners and The Seekers to Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl and Riptide. Smaller options exist too, either a singing duo on guitar and bass or an instrumental pairing of violin and guitar. They bring their own PA and gear, and just need power plus cover if the gig is outdoors. Insured.

Good to know

What to expect

You'll get a fiddle, a mandolin, acoustic guitars and a bass, and three Brisbane musicians who came up playing this stuff properly rather than picking it up for a theme night. The Irish songs everybody half knows are the backbone: Galway Girl, I'll Tell Me Ma, the ones with choruses built for a room full of people who've had a drink. But it doesn't stay there. They'll swing into folk and pop from the 60s, 70s and 80s when the night calls for it. And they'll talk it through with you first, so the set matches the music you actually want.

On the day

The PA and all the instruments travel with the band, so the gear side is handled. Two things come from your end. One is 240 volt power near where they'll be playing. The other only applies outdoors: they need to be under cover. Fiddles, mandolins and rain are a bad mix, and so are amplifiers, so a marquee or a verandah sorts it out.

Performance options

The full trio can lean Celtic all night, or move between Irish tunes and singalong covers from the 60s through to the 2020s, depending on what your crowd responds to. There are two smaller shapes as well. One is a duo on guitar and bass, singing covers. The other pairs violin with guitar for something more instrumental, though there's singing in that one too. Tell them the room and the occasion and they'll suggest which fits.
